Sweden's most popular sports are ice hockey and football. The Sweden national football team qualified for the FIFA World Cup 11 times in history, with the best finish of second received at home in 1958; one of Sweden's best World Cup finishes were third in 1950 and 1994.

The Sweden women's national football team is a powerhouse in women's football and has came close to winning the World Cup in the 2003 tournament.

The Sweden men's national ice hockey team is one of the most successful hockey teams by the IIHF; winning the Olympic gold in 2006 and the World Championship multiple times. The Sweden women's national ice hockey team is also a powerhouse in women's hockey.
