The Republic of Ireland is a country in western Europe.


Ireland's popular sports are rugby, golf, cricket, rowing and field hockey; which all of them are summer sports. According to the sports in the country, association football isn't more popular than rugby.

The Irish team has qualified for the FIFA World Cup three times; in 1990, 1994 and 2002; advancing past the first round each occasion. In 1990 they made the quarterfinals despite not winning a match and drawing all three of their games in the group stages. Stephanie Roche, who lost the 2015 Ballon d Or award to Colombia's James Rodríguez; has been the key player for the Republic of Ireland women's national football team. The Republic of Ireland qualified for the Euro in 1988, and 2012 and 2016 by winning playoffs.
