He is known for driving for both the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing team and the Ed Carpenter Racing team, which merged into CFH Racing for the 2015 season.

Currently, Newgarden drives for Team Penske in the 2017 IndyCar Series season. Newgarden won his first race with Penske at Barber in 2017 and also won the championship that year due to his 2nd place result compared to Simon Pagenaud's win at a caution-free race at 2017 Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Career

Josef Newgarden started his racing career in his last years of elementary school. Before he went to the USA for IndyCar, he raced in the UK in 2009, in the British Formula Ford series, placing in the top 5 of the standings. In 2010, he moved to the GP3 Series, where he scored little bit of points but didn't finish the season high.

2015: Start of rise

Josef Newgarden has had a 2015 season rising up, as he won two races at the 2015 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama and the 2015 Honda Indy Toronto. Eventually he made the championship contention and finished 7th due to Ryan Hunter-Reay's result.

2016

Newgarden won Iowa. He finished 4th in the point standings after Sonoma concluded.

2017: Three wins with Penske

Josef Newgarden won three races driving for Team Penske in his first year with the team after leaving Ed Carpenter Racing. Newgarden won at Barber, Toronto and Mid-Ohio. His two wins at Toronto and Mid-Ohio, compared to Scott Dixon's poor result, resulted Newgarden atop the standings.

After winning at Mid-Ohio, Newgarden qualified for the Harvey Family Men vs. Harvey Family Women and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar vs. Ralph Sampson (July 30) and played against Pee Saderd, despite drawing the Russian in the BATC Cup of 2017 Mississauga Thailand Grand Festival. Newgarden was beaten by Saderd in the final and then retired.

Newgarden won the 2017 IndyCar Series crown at Sonoma, finishing 2nd at the race behind Simon Pagenaud and compared to Pagenaud's win at a caution-free Sonoma race.
