Australia is an island country in Oceania itself. It is the largest country entirely in the Southern Hemisphere and borders no countries. Australia is known for it's rugby, field hockey and cricket, and the Australian Open in tennis.


The most popular sport in Australia is tied between rugby, field hockey and cricket; but not association football or winter sports. The Australia national soccer team qualified for the FIFA World Cup four times (two as Oceania and two as Asia).

The Australia women's national soccer team qualified for every FIFA Women's World Cup expect the first tournament in 1991. As an Oceania representative, they had early group stage exits from 1995 to 2003. The women's team at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup made history as they became the first team from Australia to win a knockout stage match in football.

Australia has had some world champions in motorsport, including Will Power in the year Australia played defending world champions Spain in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
