Dates

September 20-October 12

The 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup was the fourth FIFA Women's World Cup. Originally scheduled for China PR as host, this was moved to the United States, who previously hosted the 1999 tournament due to SARS. The 1986 FIFA World Cup also changed it's original host to a different host.

This was almost a decade after the USA hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

Qualified teams

The 16 qualified teams via their confederation participated at the World Cup. Three teams qualified for the first time: Korea Republic, Argentina and France. All three of their men's teams qualified for the World Cup in Korea/Japan the year before. Denmark failed to qualify for the first time. The highest teams ranked that failed to qualify were Italy and Denmark, who were both ranked inside the top 10. China PR remained qualification as host before moving the host country to the USA.

As of 2019, this was the last time that Russia qualified for a Women's World Cup finals. This was South Korea's last finals until 2015.
