The 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup is the third edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup. Hosts United States won the title, defeating China in the final on penalty kicks (the 2006 World Cup final also ended in penalty kicks). The World Cup was extended from 12 teams to 16 teams, allowing more teams to participate.

This Women's World Cup is considered to be one of the best Women's World Cups held, with the average number of goals scored up to 3.84 per match; a record high in a single FIFA World Cup since the men's 1950 tournament. The 1999 tournament was notable for the highest overall attendance, with over 90,000 people seeing the final.

This is the World Cup with the record for most goals, with 123. This record was broken by Brazil 2014, held in Canada in 2015 with 146 goals scored.

Teams qualified

Four teams qualified for the first time: Russia, Korea DPR, Mexico and Ghana. Teams that failed to qualify for the tournament include Euro 1997 semifinalists Spain.

This was Mexico's last finals until the 2011 tournament in Germany.

This was the last time that Italy qualified for a FIFA Women's World Cup finals until 2019, despite coming very close to making the World Cup in 2011 and 2015. In both occasions they made it to the playoffs, losing to the United States in 2011 and the Netherlands in 2015.

The following 16 teams qualified for the finals:
